Three Mistakes That Ruin Either Box
1. Ignoring the manufacturer's recommended airspace. Every subwoofer is engineered around a range of enclosure volumes. Cramming a sub into a box that's too small raises the bass response into a boomy peak; going too large loses control. Check the recommended specs in the product documentation before you cut a single panel.
2. Forgetting displacement. The subwoofer itself, internal bracing, and the port all take up airspace. Your net internal volume — after subtracting all of that — is the number that has to match the spec, not the outer dimensions of the box.
3. Skimping on construction. A flexing box wastes output and adds distortion. Use 3/4" MDF or better, glue and screw every joint, seal the seams, and brace any panel larger than about a square foot.
